AI Course vs Bootcamp vs Coaching:
Which Path Fits You?

Each path works for different people. Courses suit self-starters. Bootcamps suit beginners who need structure.
Coaching suits technical professionals who need personalized guidance.

Three Popular Paths. Different Promises.
How Do You Choose?

Courses are cheap but have 5-15% completion rates. Bootcamps cost $15K. Coaching is somewhere in between. What's the best ROI?

Every option claims to get you hired. But they're designed for different types of learners. Which one matches YOUR situation?

You can only pick one path. Switching wastes time and money. You need to get this decision right the first time.

Here's How Each Path Actually Works

The World-Class AI Engineer Cohort

I've seen people succeed (and fail) with all three approaches. The difference isn't the path. It's the match with your learning style, background, and goals.

1

Online Courses

Low cost, self-paced, but 85%+ don't finish. Best for: disciplined self-starters.

2

Bootcamps

$10K-$17K, structured, cohort-based. Best for: complete beginners who need structure.

3

The Cohort

Four-figure investment, personalized, flexible. Best for: technical professionals who need guidance.

Meet Your Mentor

Zen van Riel

My aim has been the same for years: become a world-class AI engineer. Every career move I've made has been measured against that.

I started as a software tester on a $500/month internship in the Netherlands. Taught myself to code, learned to ship real systems, and worked my way to Senior Engineer at GitHub.

Then I left GitHub. I joined an AI research lab as Member of Technical Staff, where I currently build products for secure AI monitoring.

The cohort draws directly from my real experience so you can make progress fast.

I run this special cohort with only a few people because hands-on work with me is what it takes to bring you to become a world-class AI engineer.

"The coaching played a huge part in my success. I focused on AI fundamentals, the certification path, and soft skills like professional writing. Having access to expert guidance gave me confidence during interviews and helped me feel I was on the right path.

I built my own platform (simple but functional) and deployed it on AWS. I used it in my portfolio and showcased it during interviews. The way complex topics were explained, especially the restaurant analogy for AI systems, really stuck with me. Focusing on doing the basics well was absolutely essential."

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I choose online courses?

Choose courses if: You're highly self-disciplined and can complete things without external accountability. You have limited budget ($0-$500). You already have a technical background and just need to fill specific gaps. You can structure your own learning path. Warning: Course completion rates are 5-15%. Most people who start courses don't finish them.

When should I choose a bootcamp?

Choose a bootcamp if: You're a complete beginner with no coding experience. You need maximum structure and can't self-direct. You thrive in cohort environments with peer learning. You have $10K-$17K and 12-26 weeks to dedicate full-time or near full-time. You want the brand recognition of a known program on your resume.

When should I choose the cohort?

Choose coaching if: You have transferable technical skills (SWE, data, etc.) and don't need beginner content. You want personalized guidance focused on YOUR gaps. You value direct access to someone who hires AI engineers. You prefer flexible pacing over fixed cohort schedules. You want lower upfront investment with more accountability.

How much time will this take?

You'll spend 3 hours every Tuesday in the live session and roughly 3 hours of async work in between, for 8 weeks. The Tuesday session time is fixed.

What does it cost?

It's a four-figure investment that we discuss during the 30-minute consult, alongside whether the cohort is the right fit for your project.

I've signed up for cohorts before and dropped out. How is this different?

It probably isn't, and you should hold the money. Most cohort dropouts are people who couldn't articulate what they were shipping when they signed up. That's why the consult exists, and why I turn down most applications. If we get on the call and you can't tell me what you'll have shipped at the end of week 8, I'll point you to the AI Native Engineer community until you can.

I'm not pivoting careers. I want to build a product. Does this still work?

Yes, the cohort works for people shipping their first serious AI system whether the goal is to land a senior role or to launch a product. The shipped system serves both equally well.

Do I need prior AI experience?

You need to be able to code in Python or TypeScript. Complete beginners can follow the classroom they get access to before the cohort sessions to come in well-prepared.

Can I do this while working full-time?

Yes, most attendees do. The live session is one Tuesday a week and the async work fits around your existing schedule, as long as you can carve out roughly 6 hours a week.

How do the costs actually compare?

Online courses: $0-$500, but often need multiple courses to cover everything. Bootcamps: $10,000-$17,000 for comprehensive programs. The cohort: a four-figure investment for an 8-week program. Consider also: opportunity cost of time (bootcamps are 12-26 weeks), potential salary increase if successful, and probability of completion/success.

I'm a software engineer. Which path is best for me?

For SWEs, the cohort typically offers the best ROI. Why? Bootcamps teach beginner content you already know (basic programming, version control, etc.). You're paying for 40% content you don't need. Courses can work but lack the personalized guidance to identify YOUR specific gaps. Coaching focuses exclusively on the AI-specific skills you need to add to your existing foundation.

Can I combine approaches?

Yes, and some people do. Common combinations: Courses for foundation + coaching for career strategy. Bootcamp for structure + coaching for job search. The question is whether the combined cost and time is worth it versus picking the right single path from the start. Often, the 'right path' chosen initially is more efficient than a hybrid.

I accept those who have the highest chance of success.

In the 30-minute call we discuss your goals and whether you are ready for the program.
