Meet Your Mentor

Zen van Riel

My aim has been the same for years: become a world-class AI engineer. Every career move I've made has been measured against that.

I started as a software tester on a $500/month internship in the Netherlands. Taught myself to code, learned to ship real systems, and worked my way to Senior Engineer at GitHub.

Then I left GitHub. I joined an AI research lab as Member of Technical Staff, where I currently build products for secure AI monitoring.

The cohort draws directly from my real experience so you can make progress fast.

I run this special cohort with only a few people because hands-on work with me is what it takes to bring you to become a world-class AI engineer.

"The coaching played a huge part in my success. I focused on AI fundamentals, the certification path, and soft skills like professional writing. Having access to expert guidance gave me confidence during interviews and helped me feel I was on the right path.

I built my own platform (simple but functional) and deployed it on AWS. I used it in my portfolio and showcased it during interviews. The way complex topics were explained, especially the restaurant analogy for AI systems, really stuck with me. Focusing on doing the basics well was absolutely essential."

Frequently Asked Questions

What are AI engineer salaries in Barcelona in 2026?

AI engineer salaries in Barcelona range from 45,000-70,000 EUR for mid-level roles to 80,000-120,000 EUR for senior positions. Staff and principal engineers at top companies like Amazon or King can exceed 130,000 EUR with equity. While lower than Northern Europe, the cost of living advantage and quality of life often balance out. International companies and well-funded startups pay at the higher end of these ranges.

Do I need Spanish or Catalan for AI jobs in Barcelona?

Not necessarily. Many tech companies in the 22@ district operate in English, especially international firms like Amazon, King (Activision), Typeform, and Glovo. Startups with international funding are typically English-first. However, Spanish opens more doors and helps with daily life. Catalan is rarely required for tech roles but shows cultural investment. Focus on English-friendly companies initially, then expand as you settle.

What are the top AI employers in Barcelona?

Key AI employers in Barcelona include: Amazon (AWS and Alexa AI teams), King (Activision Blizzard gaming AI), Typeform (conversational AI), Glovo (delivery optimization ML), Travelperk (travel tech AI), HP (computer vision), and numerous AI startups in the 22@ innovation district. The Pier07 tech hub and Barcelona Tech City ecosystem also host many growing AI companies. International companies generally offer higher salaries and English-first environments.

What visa options exist for AI engineers moving to Barcelona?

For non-EU citizens, the main options are: 1) Highly Qualified Professional visa (sponsored by employer), 2) Spain's Digital Nomad Visa (for remote workers earning 2x minimum wage), 3) EU Blue Card (fast-track for high-skilled workers), 4) Entrepreneur visa (if starting an AI company). The Digital Nomad Visa is popular for initial relocation, allowing you to job search locally. Processing takes 3-6 months, so start early. EU citizens can work immediately.

Are Barcelona AI jobs remote or office-based?

Most Barcelona tech companies have embraced hybrid models post-2024. Typical setups are 2-3 days in office, often in the 22@ district or Poblenou area. Fully remote roles exist but are less common for AI positions due to collaboration needs. Some companies offer 'office-optional' policies. International companies like Amazon tend to have stricter in-office requirements. Startups are generally more flexible.

How does Barcelona's cost of living compare for AI engineers?

Barcelona offers excellent value compared to other European tech hubs. Rent in good areas runs 1,200-2,000 EUR/month for a 1-2 bedroom apartment. The Eixample, Gracia, and Poblenou neighborhoods are popular with tech workers. Combined with lower taxes than Northern Europe (for the first years via Beckham Law), a 70K salary in Barcelona often provides better quality of life than 100K in London or Amsterdam. Factor in 300+ sunny days, beach access, and excellent food.

I've signed up for cohorts before and dropped out. How is this different?

It probably isn't, and you should hold the money. Most cohort dropouts are people who couldn't articulate what they were shipping when they signed up. That's why the consult exists, and why I turn down most applications. If we get on the call and you can't tell me what you'll have shipped at the end of week 8, I'll point you to the AI Native Engineer community until you can.

I'm not pivoting careers. I want to build a product. Does this still work?

Yes, the cohort works for people shipping their first serious AI system whether the goal is to land a senior role or to launch a product. The shipped system serves both equally well.

Do I need prior AI experience?

You need to be able to code in Python or TypeScript. Complete beginners can follow the classroom they get access to before the cohort sessions to come in well-prepared.

How much time will this take?

You'll spend 3 hours every Tuesday in the live session and roughly 3 hours of async work in between, for 8 weeks. The Tuesday session time is fixed.

What does it cost?

It's a four-figure investment that we discuss during the 30-minute consult, alongside whether the cohort is the right fit for your project.

Can I do this while working full-time?

Yes, most attendees do. The live session is one Tuesday a week and the async work fits around your existing schedule, as long as you can carve out roughly 6 hours a week.

I accept those who have the highest chance of success.

In the 30-minute call we discuss your goals and whether you are ready for the program.
