Meet Your Mentor

Zen van Riel

My aim has been the same for years: become a world-class AI engineer. Every career move I've made has been measured against that.

I started as a software tester on a $500/month internship in the Netherlands. Taught myself to code, learned to ship real systems, and worked my way to Senior Engineer at GitHub.

Then I left GitHub. I joined an AI research lab as Member of Technical Staff, where I currently build products for secure AI monitoring.

The cohort draws directly from my real experience so you can make progress fast.

I run this special cohort with only a few people because hands-on work with me is what it takes to bring you to become a world-class AI engineer.

AI Engineer

Built and deployed his portfolio piece, then landed the AI role

"The coaching played a huge part in my success. I focused on AI fundamentals, the certification path, and soft skills like professional writing. Having access to expert guidance gave me confidence during interviews and helped me feel I was on the right path.

I built my own platform (simple but functional) and deployed it on AWS. I used it in my portfolio and showcased it during interviews. The way complex topics were explained, especially the restaurant analogy for AI systems, really stuck with me. Focusing on doing the basics well was absolutely essential."

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the main AI employers in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh's AI job market centers around several key players. Tech companies include Skyscanner (travel AI/ML), FanDuel (sports betting algorithms), and Amazon Development Centre. The fintech scene features Nucleus Financial, Zumo, and various banking tech teams. The University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics and Edinburgh AI institutes spin out research talent and startups. Data consultancies like Addresscloud and Peak also hire AI engineers. Understanding this landscape is crucial - Edinburgh's market is concentrated enough that missing 2-3 key employers means missing most opportunities.

What are AI engineer salaries in Edinburgh?

AI engineer salaries in Edinburgh typically range from 45,000-75,000 GBP for mid-level roles, with senior positions reaching 80,000-110,000 GBP. Research-focused roles at the university may pay less (35,000-60,000 GBP) but offer academic benefits. Compared to London, salaries are 15-25% lower, but cost of living (especially housing) is significantly cheaper, often resulting in better purchasing power. Fintech and gaming companies like FanDuel tend to pay at the higher end. Remote roles for London-based companies while living in Edinburgh offer the best financial outcome.

How do I compete with PhD researchers for AI jobs?

Edinburgh's strong academic presence means many AI roles attract PhD applicants. To compete: 1) Emphasize production experience - academics often lack deployment skills, 2) Showcase business impact metrics, not just model accuracy, 3) Highlight your ability to ship quickly without lengthy research cycles, 4) Target roles at companies that value practical engineering over research papers. Startups and scale-ups particularly value engineers who can build and deploy, not just research. Your practical skills are a strength, not a weakness.

What's the quality of life for AI engineers in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh offers exceptional quality of life for tech workers. The city is walkable and beautiful, with easy access to Scottish Highlands for outdoor activities. Tech salaries go further than London - a nice flat in central Edinburgh costs 1,000-1,500 GBP/month vs 2,000-3,000 GBP in London. The tech community is tight-knit with regular meetups. Festival season brings world-class entertainment. The main trade-off is fewer job options than London, but remote work has changed this calculus significantly.

Can I work remotely for London companies from Edinburgh?

Yes, and this is increasingly common post-2020. Many London AI companies now hire remote workers across the UK. This gives you London salaries (or close to it) with Edinburgh cost of living - the best of both worlds. Some companies offer 'Edinburgh rate' adjustments of 10-15%, but you still come out ahead. Key remote-friendly AI employers include Monzo, Deliveroo, and various AI startups. During your job search, explicitly filter for remote-UK roles to maximize options.

How can coaching help me land an AI job in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh's concentrated market means strategy matters more than in larger cities. Coaching helps you: 1) Identify which of the ~50 serious AI employers match your skills, 2) Position your experience to bridge academic expectations with practical value, 3) Prepare for technical interviews that may lean more research-heavy, 4) Navigate salary negotiations in a market with less public data, 5) Build connections in the tight-knit Edinburgh tech community. Targeted guidance prevents months of unfocused applications in a market where the right approach matters.

I've signed up for cohorts before and dropped out. How is this different?

It probably isn't, and you should hold the money. Most cohort dropouts are people who couldn't articulate what they were shipping when they signed up. That's why the consult exists, and why I turn down most applications. If we get on the call and you can't tell me what you'll have shipped at the end of week 8, I'll point you to the AI Native Engineer community until you can.

I'm not pivoting careers. I want to build a product. Does this still work?

Yes, the cohort works for people shipping their first serious AI system whether the goal is to land a senior role or to launch a product. The shipped system serves both equally well.

Do I need prior AI experience?

You need to be able to code in Python or TypeScript. Complete beginners can follow the classroom they get access to before the cohort sessions to come in well-prepared.

How much time will this take?

You'll spend 3 hours every Tuesday in the live session and roughly 3 hours of async work in between, for 8 weeks. The Tuesday session time is fixed.

What does it cost?

It's a four-figure investment that we discuss during the 30-minute consult, alongside whether the cohort is the right fit for your project.

Can I do this while working full-time?

Yes, most attendees do. The live session is one Tuesday a week and the async work fits around your existing schedule, as long as you can carve out roughly 6 hours a week.

I accept those who have the highest chance of success.

In the 30-minute call we discuss your goals and whether you are ready for the program.
