Meet Your Mentor
My aim has been the same for years: become a world-class AI engineer. Every career move I've made has been measured against that.
I started as a software tester on a $500/month internship in the Netherlands. Taught myself to code, learned to ship real systems, and worked my way to Senior Engineer at GitHub.
Then I left GitHub. I joined an AI research lab as Member of Technical Staff, where I currently build products for secure AI monitoring.
The cohort draws directly from my real experience so you can make progress fast.
I run this special cohort with only a few people because hands-on work with me is what it takes to bring you to become a world-class AI engineer.

AI Engineer
Built and deployed his portfolio piece, then landed the AI role
"The coaching played a huge part in my success. I focused on AI fundamentals, the certification path, and soft skills like professional writing. Having access to expert guidance gave me confidence during interviews and helped me feel I was on the right path.
I built my own platform (simple but functional) and deployed it on AWS. I used it in my portfolio and showcased it during interviews. The way complex topics were explained, especially the restaurant analogy for AI systems, really stuck with me. Focusing on doing the basics well was absolutely essential."

Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the top AI employers in Vancouver?
Vancouver's AI job market is anchored by Big Tech and entertainment. Amazon has a major engineering hub downtown. Microsoft and Apple have growing Vancouver offices. EA Sports and other gaming studios need ML engineers for player analytics and procedural content. VFX houses like Industrial Light & Magic and DNEG use AI for animation and rendering. Smaller AI startups in Gastown and Mount Pleasant are also hiring. In 2026, expect strong demand in cloud AI (Amazon/Microsoft), gaming ML, and computer vision for film.
What do AI engineers earn in Vancouver?
Vancouver AI engineer salaries in 2026 typically range from $110,000-$180,000 CAD for mid-level roles, with senior positions at Big Tech reaching $200,000-$280,000 CAD including equity. Gaming and VFX roles trend slightly lower at $90,000-$150,000 CAD. While these numbers are below US equivalents, remember: Canadian healthcare, stronger labor protections, and Vancouver's quality of life offset some of the gap. Negotiate in CAD but benchmark against total compensation including benefits.
How do I immigrate to Canada as an AI engineer?
The main pathways for AI engineers in 2026: 1) Global Talent Stream (Category B) - fastest option, 2-week processing for skilled tech workers with a Canadian job offer. 2) Express Entry - points-based system where AI skills, education, and language scores matter. A job offer adds 50-200 CRS points. 3) Intra-company transfer - if you work for a multinational with Canadian offices. 4) BC PNP Tech - British Columbia's Provincial Nominee Program fast-tracks tech workers. Most engineers succeed through Global Talent Stream with an employer sponsoring the LMIA exemption.
Should I target Vancouver or Toronto for AI jobs?
Toronto has more AI jobs overall, especially in finance and healthcare AI. Vancouver excels in gaming, VFX, cloud infrastructure, and has a stronger startup culture per capita. Toronto salaries are slightly higher but so is competition. Vancouver offers better weather, outdoor lifestyle, and proximity to Seattle's tech scene (useful for networking). If you want gaming/entertainment AI or prioritize quality of life, choose Vancouver. For maximum job volume or fintech AI, Toronto may be better.
Are remote AI jobs available with Vancouver companies?
Yes, but hybrid is more common than fully remote. Amazon and Microsoft Vancouver offices typically expect 2-3 days in-office. Startups vary widely. Some Vancouver companies hire remotely across Canada, which is useful if you want a Vancouver salary while living somewhere cheaper. For international candidates, fully remote arrangements are rare due to tax complexity. Most employers want you in Canada, even if not in Vancouver specifically.
Can I afford Vancouver on an AI engineer salary?
Vancouver is expensive. Expect $2,000-$3,000 CAD monthly for a one-bedroom apartment downtown, less in suburbs like Burnaby or New Westminster (well-connected by SkyTrain). On a $150,000 CAD salary, you'll live comfortably but won't save as aggressively as you might in a lower-cost Canadian city. The trade-off is access to mountains, ocean, mild weather, and a vibrant tech community. Many engineers find the lifestyle worth the premium, especially coming from equally expensive US cities.
I've signed up for cohorts before and dropped out. How is this different?
It probably isn't, and you should hold the money. Most cohort dropouts are people who couldn't articulate what they were shipping when they signed up. That's why the consult exists, and why I turn down most applications. If we get on the call and you can't tell me what you'll have shipped at the end of week 8, I'll point you to the AI Native Engineer community until you can.
I'm not pivoting careers. I want to build a product. Does this still work?
Yes, the cohort works for people shipping their first serious AI system whether the goal is to land a senior role or to launch a product. The shipped system serves both equally well.
Do I need prior AI experience?
You need to be able to code in Python or TypeScript. Complete beginners can follow the classroom they get access to before the cohort sessions to come in well-prepared.
How much time will this take?
You'll spend 3 hours every Tuesday in the live session and roughly 3 hours of async work in between, for 8 weeks. The Tuesday session time is fixed.
What does it cost?
It's a four-figure investment that we discuss during the 30-minute consult, alongside whether the cohort is the right fit for your project.
Can I do this while working full-time?
Yes, most attendees do. The live session is one Tuesday a week and the async work fits around your existing schedule, as long as you can carve out roughly 6 hours a week.
I accept those who have the highest chance of success.
In the 30-minute call we discuss your goals and whether you are ready for the program.
