How Much Do AI Engineers
Make in 2025?

Short answer: $90,000 to $250,000+, depending on your level and skills.
The biggest salary factor isn't years of experience. It's whether you can build production systems.

You've Seen Wildly Different Numbers.
What's the Reality?

Salary sites show ranges from $70K to $300K. That's not helpful when you're trying to set realistic expectations.

You want to know if AI engineering is worth the career switch. Will the salary actually be better than what you make now?

You need specific numbers to negotiate, not vague 'competitive compensation' promises.

Here's What AI Engineers Actually Earn by Level

The World-Class AI Engineer Cohort

Based on real compensation data and conversations with hiring managers, here's what you can realistically expect at each level.

1

Entry-Level: $90K-$120K

New to AI but with technical foundation and portfolio

2

Mid-Level: $120K-$180K

2-4 years AI experience, can own projects end-to-end

3

Senior: $150K-$250K+

Production expertise, technical leadership, specialized skills

Meet Your Mentor

Zen van Riel

My aim has been the same for years: become a world-class AI engineer. Every career move I've made has been measured against that.

I started as a software tester on a $500/month internship in the Netherlands. Taught myself to code, learned to ship real systems, and worked my way to Senior Engineer at GitHub.

Then I left GitHub. I joined an AI research lab as Member of Technical Staff, where I currently build products for secure AI monitoring.

The cohort draws directly from my real experience so you can make progress fast.

I run this special cohort with only a few people because hands-on work with me is what it takes to bring you to become a world-class AI engineer.

"The coaching played a huge part in my success. I focused on AI fundamentals, the certification path, and soft skills like professional writing. Having access to expert guidance gave me confidence during interviews and helped me feel I was on the right path.

I built my own platform (simple but functional) and deployed it on AWS. I used it in my portfolio and showcased it during interviews. The way complex topics were explained, especially the restaurant analogy for AI systems, really stuck with me. Focusing on doing the basics well was absolutely essential."

Frequently Asked Questions

What factors most affect AI engineer salaries?

The biggest factors are: (1) Implementation vs. theory skills. Engineers who can build production systems earn 30-50% more than those who only know Jupyter notebooks. (2) Location. SF/NYC pay highest, but remote roles from other regions often match. (3) Specialization. RAG, MLOps, and agent development command premiums. (4) Industry. Fintech and healthcare AI pays above average.

What can entry-level AI engineers expect to earn?

$90,000-$120,000 in the US is realistic for entry-level AI roles in 2025. This assumes you have a portfolio of production-ready projects and can demonstrate implementation skills. Complete beginners with only course certificates might start lower ($70K-$90K). Career changers with technical backgrounds often skip 'entry-level' entirely.

What do senior AI engineers earn?

$150,000-$250,000+ base salary, with total compensation (including equity, bonuses) reaching $300K-$500K+ at top tech companies. Senior roles require: production AI system experience, ability to architect solutions, and often technical leadership. Specializations like AI infrastructure or agent systems can push into the higher ranges.

What does it cost?

It's a four-figure investment that we discuss during the 30-minute consult, alongside whether the cohort is the right fit for your project.

Can I do this while working full-time?

Yes, most attendees do. The live session is one Tuesday a week and the async work fits around your existing schedule, as long as you can carve out roughly 6 hours a week.

I've signed up for cohorts before and dropped out. How is this different?

It probably isn't, and you should hold the money. Most cohort dropouts are people who couldn't articulate what they were shipping when they signed up. That's why the consult exists, and why I turn down most applications. If we get on the call and you can't tell me what you'll have shipped at the end of week 8, I'll point you to the AI Native Engineer community until you can.

I'm not pivoting careers. I want to build a product. Does this still work?

Yes, the cohort works for people shipping their first serious AI system whether the goal is to land a senior role or to launch a product. The shipped system serves both equally well.

Do I need prior AI experience?

You need to be able to code in Python or TypeScript. Complete beginners can follow the classroom they get access to before the cohort sessions to come in well-prepared.

How much time will this take?

You'll spend 3 hours every Tuesday in the live session and roughly 3 hours of async work in between, for 8 weeks. The Tuesday session time is fixed.

Do remote AI engineers earn less than in-office?

It depends on the company's compensation philosophy. Some pay market rates regardless of location. Others adjust for cost of living. Generally, remote AI engineers working for US companies earn $100K-$180K regardless of where they live. European remote roles typically pay 20-30% less but still exceed local market rates.

How can I maximize my AI engineer salary?

Three strategies: (1) Build a portfolio demonstrating production skills. This can add 20-30% to offers. (2) Target companies with strong AI needs in their core product, not just 'AI experimentation' budgets. (3) Negotiate based on the value you provide, not your previous salary. An extra week of negotiation can add $10K-$20K to your annual compensation.

I accept those who have the highest chance of success.
